How much does stump grinding cost?

Defining Grind Terms

To ensure clarity and transparency, we have outlined key terms related to stump grinding. Understanding these terms will help you better assess the scope of your project and the associated costs.

  • Stump Grinding: The process of removing the visible portion of a tree stump by grinding it down below grade level. This process is referred to as a “Full Grind”

  • Root Structure: The network of roots that extends from the stump, which can affect the complexity and time required for grinding.

  • Grind Depth: The depth to which the stump is ground below grade, typically ranging from our standard of 6-8” or to a deeper depth of 12” below the surface. Grind Depth will be determined based upon your plans for the area after the job is complete.

  • Machine Operation Time: The total amount of time our equipment is actively working on your property to complete the grinding process.

  • Root Ball: When a tree is uprooted due to high winds or a storm, the term "Root Ball" refers to the portion of the stump and roots that remain exposed above the ground.

Since stump sizes and root structures vary based on tree species, pricing may differ for each individual job. At North Georgia Stump Removal, we charge a one hour minimum at a rate of $250 per machine operation hour. The chart provided outlines approximate grind times for various stump sizes, giving you a general idea of the time required for your project. For a precise estimate, please scroll down and review the "Rapid Estimates" section, which details our process for providing onsite estimates.

*Disclaimer* This page does not give you an estimate for stump removal. This page is designed to inform you of the key factors and considerations we assess when providing an onsite estimate. By following the instructions below and submitting the required information through our "Contact Us" page, you help us deliver an accurate estimate promptly.

Other Factors That We Consider:

Stumps Location: Factors such as inclines, gates, and utility locations.

Utilities: Utility lines can factor into our grind time by the amount of risk based upon their positioning in relation to the stump. We call Georgia’s 811 utility location services before every job so we properly avoid ruining everyone’s day!

Tree Species: Is it a hardwood or softwood? The density and strength of the wood plays a part in machine wear and time grinding the stump.

Future Plans: What do you plan on doing with the area after the stump has been removed? Different plans may cause for different courses of action.

How to Measure a Stump:

To the side is a picture that illustrates the proper and improper way of measuring a stump. Highlighted in green shows the proper way. When a tree is growing, it can create a mound of roots around the stump that protrude above the grade of soil and grass. When removing a stump, we want to grind everything so that ensures it can be graded out properly. When using a tape measure, be sure to measure the full length of the mound so we can have an accurate idea of the job!
